Severe floods in parts of Somalia
Just recovered from the drought of 2017, today, it is the most severe floods in parts of Somalia
Due to the heavy rain of in this week and increased the level of the Juba and Shabele rivers were the variuous of somalia region (Hirshabele, Galmudug, jubaland, Banadir and South West) flooded. Those regions are in crisis and hundreds of vulnerable people has been effected and displaced. At least 427,000 people have been affected said the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) in Friday. Nearly 175,000 of the effected people are displacing. Beledweyn the capital of Hiiran region is the most effected city in the central somalia.
People are desperate and in need. There no sufficient food, safe drinking water, hygiene and sanitation facilities, emergency education and temporary shelter. The emergency situation is further compounded for flood affected people with vulnerabilities. There is a pressing necessity to provide immediate assistance to minimize loss of life and to ensure that the needs of the most vulnerable are covered.
There is threat now of cholera and other diseases due to lack of clean water in many areas. Outbreaks of diarrhea and some cases of measles are striking down people, mainly children, elders, disable and pragnant women are already weakened by hunger.
Somali president Mohamed abdulahi Farmaajo has cancalled Sunday 25th of April his planned trip to Burundi and called a meeting with National Disaster Response Committee to act on this emergency situtation of the parts of somalia.
The emergency response is currently being coordinated by UNOCHA working together with authorities from affected regions (Jubaland, Galmudug, South West State and Banadir). To ensure that the humanitarian response is well coordinated and complementary, Diaspora Groups in different parts of the world are organizing themself and trying to be part of the emergency response.
